FAQs

Can the furniture touch-up markers restore scratched wooden surfaces?

Indeed, these markers are made especially to help hide and fix scuffs and scratches on wood surfaces, including cabinets and furniture. They are loaded with wood-tone ink, which, when used, matches the colour of the surrounding wood by blending into the scratch. The marker effectively "restores" the wood's appearance by colouring in the faint scratch or worn area, making the flaw much less obvious. It's an easy way to improve the appearance of scratched furniture. It will camouflage the scratch by matching the colour of the wood grain if you simply select the shade that is closest to your furniture (oak, cherry, walnut, mahogany tones, etc.).

What colors of furniture markers are available?

To match common furniture finishes, we provide furniture touch-up markers in a variety of wood-tone colours. Light oak (blonde wood), medium brown, dark brown (walnut), cherry/reddish brown, mahogany, black, and occasionally white or grey for painted furniture are among the colours that they typically come in sets of. For example, six markers in a popular set could range in colour from very light tan wood to nearly black. With these choices, you can choose the colour that most closely matches your furniture or even mix two colours by layering one on top of the other for a more accurate match.

Do the touch-up marks require sealing, or are they permanent on their own?

For everyday indoor use, the furniture markers' ink usually doesn't need an extra sealant because it is permanent once it dries. It is designed to remain in place by soaking into the wood grain or finish. It will be difficult to rub off if you allow it to dry for a minute or two after applying. The touch-up should still be durable for furniture that is frequently used or cleaned, but bear in mind that it is essentially an ink/paint layer. The colour may eventually lighten if you scrub the area vigorously or use chemical cleaners a lot; in that case, you could simply reapply the marker. After the ink dries, you could dab a little clear varnish or polyurethane over the touched-up area for added durability (for instance, on a floor or a surface that gets wet or handles a lot). However, this is not required for the majority of minor scratches on surfaces, furniture legs, or sides. In conclusion, sealing is optional for high-wear areas; markers alone provide a long-lasting effect.

Can the markers be used on laminated or veneered surfaces as well as solid wood?

Yes, you can use the touch-up markers on wood veneers and laminates. They colour the scratch to work on any surface that resembles finished wood. The marker will colour the exposed lighter area of a laminate piece (like IKEA furniture) with a scratch, making it much less noticeable. Similarly, a scratch that penetrates the stain on veneered particle board can be coloured in. The only thing to keep in mind is that extremely glossy laminates may not absorb the ink as well as real wood, so you may need to wait for the ink to dry before applying a second coat to intensify the colour. Additionally, make sure the area is clean (no furniture polish residue) before applying, and test in a less noticeable area first to make sure the colours match. Applying it to the scratch after you're satisfied should greatly enhance the appearance by blending the mark with the remainder of the finish.

Do the furniture markers work on other materials, like metal or plastic on furniture?

These markers may not stick as well to very smooth, non-porous materials like metal or plastic because they are designed for porous surfaces like wood. Because it can't soak in, the ink may bead up or rub off more readily on plastic caps or metal furniture legs. Because it's not the intended use, outcomes may differ. Nevertheless, a marker may somewhat darken a scratch if the metal or plastic is dark and only slightly scuffed (for example, applying a black marker to a black metal frame scratch). Just be advised that it might not remain on those surfaces permanently. In those situations, enamel or model paint may be preferable. The furniture markers work best on wood, wood veneer, or laminate surfaces where they can absorb a little bit, but you can try it on non-wood parts in an emergency.
